On Friday, the Recording Academy announced the 2024 Grammy nominations with a number of high-profile electronic artists representing the Dance/Electronic and Pop Dance categories.
Skrillex has received two nominations, earning a nod in the Best Dance/Electronic Recording category for “Rumble,” his collaborative single with Fred Again.. And Flowdan from his album Quest For Fire, which was also nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
In addition to being nominated for his contribution on “Rumble,” Fred Again.. Received another two nominations: one in the Best Dance/Electronic Recording category for his collaboration with Romy on “Strong,” and one in the Best Dance/Electronic Album for Actual Life 3 (January 1-September 23, 2022).
James Blake also earned two nominations: One for his single “Loading” nominated for Best Dance/Electronic recording, and one for his album, Playing Robots Into Space in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category.
For the first time this year, the Grammy Awards also added Best Pop Dance Recording to acknowledge artists whose dance music work overlaps with pop music, an association becoming more and more common in 2023. Major artists like Calvin Harris and David Guetta received nominations in this new category.
This year, the Recording Academy did not nominate any solo female producers or Black artists in the Dance/Electronic categories, inciting continued social commentary from artists like Aluna.
The prominent singer, producer, DJ (who put out her new album, MYCELiUM, this year) and advocate for equal representation in dance music posted a statement to Instagram following the Grammy announcement. The caption also includes numerous Black artists who shared music in the past year.
A portion of Aluna’s statement reads as follows:
“After the next five mins I’m never looking back at the @recordingacademy, its a fossil IMO and I speak from experience of having worked to make changes there for the past two years. I don’t just blame the academy – it’s the industry in general.”
