New Outdoor “Drinking Zones” Coming To California This Summer To Help Boost Economy

It’s been a tough road for a lot of small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, but as California slowly begins to open up a bit more, there is some relief in sight for many bars and restaurants.

During this pandemic, bars here in California were forced to close as they were considered non-essential businesses. However, new guidance from the California ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) has outlined a new plan that could help to make up for loss funds. Announced today, ABC’s new Temporary Catering Authorization (TCA) will allow for restaurants and bars to come up with an outdoor area for patrons to consume food and alcohol. If the establishment gets approved by the ABC, it can serve drinks on nearby parking lots, sidewalks and areas close to their business.

This came as Governor Newsom announced that many businesses in 53 California counties could be allowed to reopen in the coming months, as long as they are practicing social distancing guidelines. This obviously only applies to counties where the temporary stay at home orders have been lifted.

Adjacent areas under the control of the licensee include, but are not limited to:

  • Indoor areas that are accessible from within the licensed premises but not currently licensed;
  • Outdoor areas that are accessible from the licensed premises but not currently licensed;
  • Indoor and outdoor areas under the control of the licensee and one or more other businesses;
  • Parking lots;
  • Sidewalks and other public thoroughfares that are closed to public access during the period of service;
  • Other areas within close proximity to the licensed premises that are immediately accessible to the licensee, and that are secured by and under the control of the licensee, at the discretion of the Department.

Could be new way to enjoy your beverages this summer while allowing our local economy begin to bounce back, and for businesses to get creative with their dining events.
