Ibiza’s Outdoor Bars & Restaurants Open Next Month

According to local authorities in Ibiza, bars and restaurants will be able to re-open their outdoor areas starting March 2. The announcement was made by Spanish news outlet, The Olive Press, who announced that the Balearic government will begin to implement their de-escalation plan starting March 2. Formentera, Menorca, and Mallorca will also be included in the de-escalation plan. Outdoor areas including terraces and outdoor spaces will be able to re-open starting March 2, while indoor seating will be open starting March 16 as long as C02 meters are put in place.

There has been a bit of backlash in Mallorca as 80% of Mallorca’s restaurants and bars do not have outdoor seating areas. Ibiza currently has an extreme COVID-19 risk and the Balearics are considered to be a high risk while Mallorca is at a medium risk. Tourism in Spain supports a majority of its economy, 12% of the country’s GDP to be exact. According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, Spain accumulates over 80 million tourists a year. Obviously, those numbers have drastically decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Ibiza is looking to gain that traction back with its latest de-escalation plan and implementation.

For such a small island, Ibiza attracts tourists from all around the world to its sandy beaches and exotic nightclubs. Not being able to host events has impacted the country economically but time has finally come to return to normal, at least partially.
