The globally-renowned dance music festival, Tomorrowland, has officially requested permits to hold three festival weekends in 2022. This follows two consecutive years of cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the cancellation of one edition of Tomorrowland Winter.
Following the multiple sudden cessations of operations, the festival is facing significant financial issues. According to representatives of Tomorrowland, the festival is now €25 million in debt. The third weekend would serve to assuage that discrepancy.
“We really have to do this to cushion the financial hangover,” event spokesperson Debby Wilmsen told Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. “Before Covid, there were no plans to start organizing three weekends.”
Tomorrowland first hosted two weekends on the tenth anniversary of the event in 2014. The original intention was to only do two weekends on anniversaries moving forward, but the trend continued every year following.
The potential third weekend of Tomorrowland would happen July 15-17, 2022. The festival is already confirmed for July 22-24 and July 29-31, 2022. The event is scheduled to return to its same home of Boom, Belgium.
