Ukrainian melodic techno duo, ARTBAT, are back on their own label UPPERGROUND with an exquisite new single. “Horizon” demonstrates their raw musical sensibility, juxtaposed against adept production knowledge.
The track opens in a minimal soundscape as arpeggiating synths flare up from all directions before a resounding techno beat enters without inhibition. Soon after, a wash of sparse color tones begins to bounce around the perimeter. The collection of sounds serve as an aural landbridge into the breakdown where a resonant piano melody floats on top of ambient chords.
“Horizon” is both similar and different compared to ARTBAT’s previous UPPERGROUND single, “Flame.” Both tracks include a refined understanding of musical form and structure. However, “Flame” leans far more into the heavy aesthetic they have brought to the warehouse time and time again.
