Starting next year, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival will be bigger than ever.
The Indio City Council voted to increase attendance for both festivals. Coachella would increase by 26,000 people to 125,000. Stagecoach would increase by 10,000 people to 85,000.
That’s an extra 62,000 people over three weekends in April.
The increase would be gradual so officials could prepare for the extra crowds. The Mayor of Indio said the attendance boost would have little impact. Goldenvoice, the promoters of both festivals, will increase the venue by 50 acres. This would allow for more room for attendees, campers, and transportation services.
Goldenvoice’s Vice President Skip Paige said, “We could do five Coachellas with the amount of people that want to come to that show.”
It is nice to see the festival continue to grow and benefit those living in the Coachella Valley. 62,000 additional tickets means $1 million will be collected in extra ticket taxes for the city of Indio. This year, the city is taking in $3 million in ticket taxes. $403 million will be generated for businesses across the desert during all three festival weekends. As a former resident of Palm Springs, I can tell you that the expansion is a great thing for residents and businesses that depend on events like Coachella. My advice, book a room as soon as you decide you are going to Coachella, because they will be going faster than ever due to the attendance increase.
The sold out Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is set for April 15-17 and April 22-24 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio. Stagecoach takes place the following weekend.
We’ll see you there for weekend 2, and keep it here for continuing coverage of Coachella!
