Skrillex is on an album-releasing rampage as he dropped his second album this past week, Don’t Get Too Close, a day after he released Quest For Fire.
The album came during his impromptu performance at Madison Square Garden with Four Tet and Fred again.., two collaborators on Quest For Fire.
At the event, bootleg CDs of the album were available that would not be able anywhere else, adding to the element of exclusivity that the sold-out event already advertised. He also brought out Porter Robinson to play out their track with Bibi Bourelly, “Still Here (with the ones that I came with).”
The album features a more pop-focused direction, acknowledging the electronic past that got the acclaimed artist to where he is today, but looking forward to blending pop and dance as he has been known to do. Collaborators on this LP include Justin Bieber, Kid Cudi, Swae Lee, Pinkpantheress, and more.
But Skrillex has been using renegade marketing tactics throughout the release of both albums, hosting a surprise Valentine’s Day pop-up at Good Room, a party on Thursday at Le Poisson Rouge, and a massive live set in the middle of Times Square for The Lot Radio on Friday broadcasted from a school bus turned sound system.
A Redditor uncovered a tweet from Skrillex in 2011 that emphasized his philosophy on underground events, stating, “FYI, no matter how big I get, I’ll always play smaller shows, unannounced DJ gigs and what not as well as the big things.”
