Mount Etna, Europe’s Largest Volcano, Erupts Causing Flight Cancelations & Delays

Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted this past weekend, causing flight delays and cancelations in Sicily, Italy covering the region in ash.

Italy’s sixth busiest airport, Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), is around 20 miles from Mount Etna and has had about 34% of its flights canceled and 15% delayed from Sunday to Monday.

The Catania to Rome flight is the busiest in Italy and the second busiest in Europe, carrying over 10 million passengers per year.

Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and Europe’s largest, often erupting in small bursts. The last major eruption was in 1922, but in early 2021, Etna did erupt for a few weeks.

Etna was also reportedly spewing ash on May 14, 2023.

CTA has currently reopened and scientists say the eruption has stopped for now.

But Italy’s National Civil Protection Agency did warn that in light of the increased volcanic activity, “sudden” variations of Etna’s activity could occur.
