United Airlines is increasing accessibility on its planes for the vision impaired by adding Braille to all of its aircraft cabins.
The new placards will have raised lettering and Braille for labeling rows and seats as well as the inside and outside of aircraft bathrooms, adding to individual aircrafts as they undergo “United Next” cabin retrofitting.
About a dozen planes already have Braille signs added, but the full fleet is expected to be complete by 2026. United will then become the first US airline with fleetwide Braille signage.
Mark Muren, a managing director at United who oversaw the project, said, “This is placards. This is a small thing, and we acknowledge this isn’t a world-changing event. But it is a part of our journey here. We believe that the more accessible United can be to all customers, the better it is for everybody. ”
