A New Report Reveals Over 100 UK Nightclubs Have Closed In The Last Year

A new report from consumer intelligence company CGA Nielsen – solicited by the UK’s Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) – shows that over 100 of the country’s independent nightclubs have shut down in the last year.

The CGA data, obtained over three years, indicates that over 30% of the UK’s clubs closed between June 2020 and June 2023, 12% of which shut their doors in the last 12 months.

NTIA CEO Michael Kill said, “The recent figures from CGA Neilsen are extremely alarming, and if taken back to 2019 show an even more dramatic picture for these businesses, with losses nearer 40%.”

“These businesses are facing some critical challenges, with many not knowing whether they will survive over the coming months,” he continued.

The NTIA states that the decline is due to “rising expenses, including but not limited to rent, utilities, labor, and maintenance” and is “further compounded by the ongoing global economic uncertainties brought about by the pandemic.”

According to the NTIA, the UK’s nightlife sector is an important part of the national economy and generates £112 billion in revenue each year – 6% of the country’s total revenue.

“We have constantly highlighted to the Government the concerns around these businesses, particularly independent venues,” Kill said. “Without further support we may lose many more of these businesses before the end of the year.

The new report found that 991 independent nightclubs were active in the UK in June 2020 and just 649 remain active as of June 2023 – a decline of 35%

The NTIA is urging governments “to consider tailored financial relief, regulatory flexibility, and other supportive measures” in order to “prioritize the preservation of independent nightclubs, which are not only sources of entertainment but also hubs of creativity and inclusivity.”

Many of the UK’s most prominent clubs have closed since early 2022, including Broadwick Live-owned venues The Drumsheds and Printworks. However, Broadwick Live will open a new DRUMSHEDS venue next month.
