Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” Is Now One Of Just 40 Songs To Reach 2 Billion Spotify Streams

Avicii‘s smash hit “Wake Me Up” has now reached the major milestone of two billion streams on Spotify.

Released in 2013, the track from the legendary producer, which features vocals from singer Aloe Blacc, has joined a short list of only 40 songs in history to clear the impressive statistic.

The news was confirmed on Sunday afternoon by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek who wrote on social media

“Some big news today. ‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii is the first song by a Swedish artist to break 2B streams on Spotify. It’s so amazing to see Avicii’s influence and remarkable work continuing to bring joy to so many around the world.”

“Wake Me Up” received certified diamond status earlier this summer, after becoming the best-selling dance single in history, moving 10 million certified copies.

Speaking on the milestone and his collaboration with the late Avicii—whose real name is Tim Bergling—Aloe Blacc said, “Tim’s energy and effort in producing my vocal performance and other instrumentation really shows the passion he had for creating.”

The 2 billion mark for “Wake Me Up” serves as a testament to Bergling’s lasting impact on both electronic dance music and music at large even after his tragic death by suicide in 2018 at the age of 28.

A timely new documentary covering Bergling’s life and career is currently in production from Academy Award-winning producer Lawrence Bender. Fans can learn more about the making of “Wake Me Up” in the video below.
