Last week, TikTok and Billboard announced the debut of the TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart, a weekly music chart that will gauge the most popular tracks on the social media platform based on “creations, video views and user engagement.”
The Top 50 chart is the first music chart to measure the popularity of music on TikTok. As of now, the chart will only rank music in the United States.
Sexyy Red’s “SkeeYee” has taken the first number one spot. Other notable inclusions on the chart’s inaugural edition include “Paint The Town Red” by Doja Cat, “Deli” by Ice Spice and “august” by Taylor Swift.
In the past year, a number of older songs have also increased in popularity as a result of their use on TikTok, like Kate Bush’s 1985 single “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).” The song reached viral pop culture status following after being featured on Netflix’s Stranger Things, inspiring increased use by fans on TikTok.
TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, Ole Obermann said, “TikTok is already the world’s most powerful platform for music discovery and promotion, and each week our passionate community of music fans drives songs onto the Billboard charts.”
He continued, “It therefore made perfect sense to partner with Billboard to create the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart. The chart gives a clear picture of the music that is being listened to on TikTok, and consequently starting to trend on DSPs and other services.”
This new chart further emphasizes the power of TikTok in the modern music industry as well. Several artists like country wunderkind Bailey Zimmerman and the alternative dance starlet PinkPantheress rose to prominence because of the platform, and now with an official chart, the social media app will be an even larger focus for musicians moving forward.
