“The Spark,” the viral drum & bass tune sung by a group of Irish pre-teen rappers, has been longlisted for the 2025 Grammy Awards.
The track, which racked up millions of views on social media and became a trending sound on TikTok soon after its release by Cork and Clare-based youth rap collectives Kabin Crew and Lisdoonvarna Crew in May, is up for consideration in two Grammy categories: Best Dance/Electronic Recording and Song of the Year.
Organized by Cork non-profit youth music center The Kabin Studio and originally made for Ireland’s Cruinniú na nÓg initiative, an annual day dedicated to children’s creativity, “The Spark” and its peppy, G-rated lyrics captured the hearts of the masses this summer, garnering over two billion views on social media to date, according to the Irish Times, and propelling the Kabin kiddos to festival performances and link-ups with superstars like Stormzy, Becky Hill and Tove Lo.
Announcing the Grammy news on Instagram, The Kabin Studio founder Garry McCarthy wrote, “What a mad few months this has been! A song that we created for the Rhyme Island initiative with the crew of legendary kids and tutors at The Kabin and in Lisdoonvarna is longlisted for the Grammys.”
Voting for this year’s Grammy shortlist is currently underway. The final nominees will be announced on November 2, before the 67th Grammy Awards ceremony returns to Los Angeles on February 2.
Will “The Spark” win a Grammy? ‘We doubt it.’ But that won’t stop us from throwing up our gun fingers every time we hear it. As one social media user put it on X: “Some Irish primary school kids made a tune and there is zero legitimate reason for it to go this hard holy s***.”
