Kygo’s new remix of a song that star footballer Erling Haaland made as a teenager has become the unofficial anthem of Norway’s World Cup run.
For a bit of fun ahead of the Norwegian national soccer team’s round of 16 matchup with Brazil last weekend, the chart-topping Norwegian artist promised to release his remix of “Kygo Jo”—a homemade rap song made by a then-16-year-old Haaland and his friends in 2016—only if the world-famous striker scored in the match. Lucky for fans, that’s what Haaland does best.
After Norway’s No. 9 knocked in two goals against the Seleção on Sunday, lifting his team to a 2-1 win, Kygo kept his word and officially dropped the track in collaboration with Lyng (Haaland’s teenage rap alias) and the soccer star’s teenage buddies, Flow Kingz and JMK, on Tuesday.
What was once a meme has now been adopted by soccer fans across Norway as a celebratory tune, so much so that the track reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Norway Top 50 earlier today.
As Norway gears up to take on England in the World Cup quarterfinals tomorrow, you can bet “Kygo Jo” will be blasting at watch parties around the world.
