FENIK and Walker & Royce have released their brooding new tech house single, “Utopia.”
Out today on John Summit’s Experts Only, the high-energy stomper is as much built for ravers cutting shapes as those lost in the dancefloor sauce, striking a balance between deep thought and peak-time movement in an eddy of driving drums, playful synths, and its weighty refrain, “there’s no such thing as Utopia.”
“Utopia was inspired by a class I took in college which always stuck with me,” FENIK said in a statement. “The class was two classes in one, called Utopian and Dystopian Literature. The whole point of the class was to show the similarities between dystopias and utopias, and the ingrained flaw in a utopia, which is that without pain or lows, there is no such thing as happiness or highs.”
“I ended up writing the lyrics to the track a few years after the class, after finding one of the books from the class, The Utopia Reader, in a box under my bed while doing some cleaning,” he continued.
Walker & Royce echoed the sentiment in a statement of their own: “We feel the energy of the track fits a feeling a lot of people might be having right now, coming to grips with a less-than-perfect reality but always keeping hope alive.”
A staple of John Summit’s recent sets, the track marks the first official collaboration between Walker & Royce and FENIK, a regular contributor to the duo’s Rules Don’t Apply Records, who caught his break with a slew of releases for the label in 2024.
