Air New Zealand will soon offer in-flight sleep pods called Skynest to get better sleep on those long flights down under.
The pods are essentially bunk beds for economy passengers that can be added to the current ticket price. Travelers can book the pods in four-hour blocks for an extra $250-$380.
Each pod will come with fresh bedding, a full-size pillow, a blanket and sheets, earplugs, and a USB outlet. At the end of the sleep shift, the lights will come on gently to wake the passenger.
The new sleep pods will roll out this September on Air New Zealand flights between Auckland and Chicago and New York.
Air New Zealand currently offers the Skycouch option on long-haul economy flights where passengers can essentially book a whole row in order to lie flat across the seats.
The Skycouch does cost less than a business class or premium economy seat and can be booked for one to three people in the same party, usually to keep children and adults together.
