AlphaTheta, the rebranded parent company of Pioneer DJ, has released a new feature-length documentary covering the history and modern-day transformation of the legendary club scene in Ibiza.
Available to watch for free on the company’s YouTube channel, The Evolution of Ibiza: Can the White Isle retain its legendary magic? charts the Balearic island’s growth from a hippie hotspot in the 1960s to the world’s foremost clubbing destination, and asks tough questions about whether it can retain its crown in the wake of rising costs for travelers.
The 68-minute film, produced by Dan Tait and directed by Laurence Koe, features interviews with iconic DJs like Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Kölsch, and more, as well as club promoters, Ibiza locals, and government officials.
According to research conducted by AlphaTheta, over 77 percent of clubbers view Ibiza as a must-visit destination, and more than 63 percent believe it’s the best place on Earth for dance music culture.
However, in the wake of this growth, key figures on the island believe that its ethos as an inclusive and accessible place for clubbers of all tax brackets is under threat.
“The thing is about Ibiza, it was never really meant to be the pinnacle of club culture in any way, shape, or form, but it turned into that,” Cox remarks in the film. “Back in the day you just bought a ticket to go in the club and that was it. Now it’s like there’s no more for GA, you have to buy a VIP ticket.
“The prices have gone up considerably in a lot of venues, which is a real shame,” adds IMS Ibiza founder Danny Whittle. “It’s affected tourism, but the energy to visit Ibiza is still there. We’re breaking records with the number of visitors, even if they tend to stay for shorter periods due to costs.”
