Awakenings NYE will no longer take place. Per a social media announcement from the renowned techno party brand, the renewed restrictions from the Dutch government have expanded the ban on all night events until January 14, 2022.
“We are very sad, however, we keep our heads up high and hope you do too,” the caption of the post reads.
In recent weeks, many countries in Europe have renewed their restrictions surrounding COVID-19 due to a continent-wide surge. Berlin banned dancing from all of its nightclubs. France implemented a four-week closure of their nightclubs as well.
According to Reuters, Europe is averaging around 400,000 new cases per day, the highest number since November of last year. This is likely a result of the Omicron variant of the virus combined with increased gatherings due to the holidays.
Some positive news for the Netherlands is that the daily infection rate has been decreasing for ten days straight. Although, as the country moves into another nearly full lockdown, it’s questionable how receptive citizens will be.
When lockdowns were in place over Summer, hundreds of events joined forces to form the protest movement, Unmute Us! demanding lifts on bans attached to large-scale events. March of 2022 will mark the third year of living with the virus. Should similar bans continue, the patience of eager partiers could wear thin without their chosen form of recreation.
