Coachella Sees Slowest Ticket Sales In 10 Years

Almost a full week after ticket sales were opened to the public, 2024 Coachella passes are still up for grabs, marking the California festival’s slowest ticket sales in a decade, according to Bay Area newsletter SFGate.

Securing a weekend pass for Coachella has proved incredibly difficult over the years. High ticket prices and long virtual queues have done little to quell demand for a chance to see some of the world’s most influential music icons.

In 2015, the festival sold out in just 40 minutes. Six years later, in 2022, the ticket on-sale period lasted four hours before fans’ Coachella Valley dreams were crushed. Last year, weekend one passes sold out in two days.

Now, in 2024, it appears this ticket sale drop-off has reached critical mass. As of January 25, Coachella weekend one tickets are still available at tier two pricing and fans can still grab weekend two tickets at tier one, the lowest price on offer.

With at least two more tiers remaining for either weekend, a large majority of Coachella’s more than 250,000 tickets are readily available.

According to SFGate, this slowdown could be attributed to an “underwhelming” 2024 lineup, with headliners Doja Cat, Tyler, The Creator, Lana Del Rey and No Doubt. But Coachella has dealt with this before, selling out despite lineup complaints on the road to being hailed as a “lineup-proof” event.

Amid ongoing buyer woes in the ticketing industry, Coachella has continued to increase its ticket prices, following suit with other events like Bonnaroo and Electric Forest, which both announced significant price hikes for 2024.

In 2017, a general admission Coachella wristband cost $399. In 2022, tier one passes were set at $449. A ticket for the festival’s 2024 edition will run attendees $499 plus fees, with base prices rising to as much as $599 in tier three.

With a mild recession projected for 2024, music fans may be sticking to their guns and prioritizing their finances first, leading to a tipping of the scales in which supply outnumbers demand.
