County Officials Unanimously Approve New Maryland Sphere Venue

Maryland Sphere

Maryland is officially getting a Sphere Entertainement venue.

Prince George’s County councilmembers authorized the country to issue up to $215 million in special obligation bonds to help build the 6,000-seat venue in National Harbor in a unanimous 8-0 vote earlier this week. It will cost approximately $1.4 billion to build, the Washington Post reports.

The venue will arrive in the popular entertainment district, situated about 15 minutes from Washington, D.C., as the second of its kind in the U.S. and the first smaller-scale counterpart to the Las Vegas Sphere, which holds 17,600 seats.

The Maryland Sphere will feature the same technology as the flagship Las Vegas venue, including its famous LED exosphere, immersive sound, haptic seating, 4D environmental effects, and 16K x 16K interior display—the highest resolution screen in the world.

Officially titled Sphere National Harbor, the attraction is expected to generate $63 million in annual taxes for Prince George’s County, according to county officials.

A timeline for the build is yet to be announced.
