Returning to Play Me Records, west coast drum & bass artist dela Moon turns loose a full-frequency variation on tech-driven D&B with her first 2023 release, her Rough Protocol EP.
Since 1999, dela Moon has been exploring every corner and realm of electronic music. When describing her sound you will find that she hits strokes in every genre, spanning from drum and bass, dubstep, midtempo glitch, downtempo, tribal, world, funk, and hip-hop, all mixed in with her techy elements.
dela Moon is also a resident and organizer of Southern California’s legendary Moontribe Collective. Since 1993, Moontribe’s full-moon desert gatherings have been at the core of Southern California’s underground electronic music scene.
“Rough Protocol” arrives in full momentum giving a darker twist on the usual uplifting sounds dela Moon carries with her. Blending technical synths and basslines with theatrical breakdowns and hair-raising drops, you will still catch yourself falling down the rabbit hole of an EP.
The title track throws you right into the dark underground world of drum and bass, and once you lurk through the intro, dela Moon throws listeners onto the bassline, slapping you right in the face with no intention of slowing down.
The journey continues throughout the second track “Memory Error,” a psychedelic adventure with a deep melody that doesn’t hold back. It chops down the drums and the bass and mashes them together so well that you will be left in a trance. A trance that mirrors the positive energy she carries within her life.
