Elephante has released his fifth full-length album, COPE.
Landing on his own Hidden Horizon label last month, the Los Angeles-based melodic producer’s new 10-track LP explores a swath of emotional themes, from healing and resilience to navigating hurt and hardship.
“Thematically, it’s about all the different ways that we get through trauma and difficult moments in our lives,” Elephante—real name Tim Wu—shared in a press release. “Each of the songs is a different approach to coping.”
At the center of this exploration is the album’s focus track and lead single, “Taste of Your Tounge.” Featuring vocals from singer-songwriter babyidontlikeyou, the bouncy future house groove shows off Elephante’s skilled blend of emotional storytelling and modern electronic production and taps into the reminiscence of a hot and heavy, whirlwind romance.
“As time goes on, we forget the bad and remember the good, and sometimes we make mistakes trying to recapture the magic,” Elephante said of the track. “And sometimes you just gotta say f*** it, and have that fling you know you shouldn’t.”
The rest of COPE cascades through a variety of electronic styles, from tidal waves of bass on tracks like “Say It Like You Mean It,” “Leave The Ground,” and “Forever Weather,” to cool liquid D&B on “Don’t Turn Back” and “Amends,” and trancey, dancefloor-ready tunes like “All Is Not Lost,” “All We Get,” and “Know Your Name.”
The album marks a watershed moment for Elephante’s Hidden Horizon label as its first full-length LP release. The Asian American artist teamed up with fellow producer SABAI to launch the imprint at Miami Music Week in March, with a focus on growing and serving the Asian American dance music community and uplifting Asian and Asian American DJs, musicians, and producers.
Elephante will also hit the road next year for a 22-date album tour featuring a combination of DJ sets and live performances. The tour starts in Boston on January 24 and closes in Tempe on April 19.
