GRiZ has created his own video game, leading fans on a “sidequest” to unlock new tracks from his upcoming Sidequest Vol.1 mixtape.
Unveiled today as the latest of several cryptic teasers for the upcoming release, the pixelated, fantasy-inspired game pits players against a dragon foe. After they choose an action (run, fight, or hide), a digital die roll determines their fate. If the resulting number is high enough, the player gets to hear a snippet from one of 12 tracks on GRiZ’s latest project. The game is also repeatable, so fans can hear them all.
The interactive promo marks the culmination of an immersive rollout for Sidequest Vol. 1, after fans uncovered the link to the game and a countdown clock for the EP release, hidden within puzzles and easter eggs from a GRiZ-themed newspaper that the artist dropped around Chicago last month.
Sidequest Vol. 1 is due out this Friday, June 1. The release follows GRiZ’s four-track GEMiNI EP, and his high-octane collaboration with Wooli, “Chaos Theory,” as anticipation builds for the saxophone-toting bass artist’s return to the stage after a two-year performance hiatus, taking place at his curated Valley of the Seven Stars festival in Virginia this October. He’s also slated for respective double-header shows in San Francisco and Chicago in November.
