Iconic producer and DJ Robbert van de Corput, AKA Hardwell, received the prestigious title of “honorary citizen” in his hometown of Breda, Netherlands this past Saturday.
Ahead of his set at Breda Live 2023, Hardwell was surprised on stage by Breda Mayor Paul Depla who presented him with the honor—similar to receiving a “key to the city.”
The occasion was Hardwell’s seventh performance at his hometown festival. Throughout his career, he has been known to turn down major performances around the world in order to be available for Breda Live.
Hardwell is one of only three individuals to be named an honorary citizen of Breda, joined by former mayor Peter van der Velden and fellow dance music legend Tijs Verwest—better known to the masses as Tiësto.
“Robbert is an example for many. In addition to his successful music career and twice being crowned the World’s No. 1 DJ, he has helped talented people (from Breda) to develop further,” Depla said. “Alongside this, he works as an ambassador for local charities. If you mention Hardwell, Breda often follows in the same breath.”
Hardwell was awarded the Breda Culture Prize for his achievements and commitment to the city in 2014, and he made “Zero 76,” a collaborative ode to Breda, with Tiësto in 2011.
Hardwell has also helped to stimulate Breda’s economy by involving local companies in his tours and inviting Breda-based DJs to open for him. More than 50% of employees at his Revealed Recordings label are from Breda.
Expressing gratitude to Mayor Depla and the Breda city council, Hardwell wrote on Instagram:
“I’m beyond grateful and deeply honoured to be named an honorary citizen of my hometown, Breda. This recognition means everything to me. Breda has been my inspiration and my home from the very beginning. It’s where my dreams took flight.”
