With this year’s edition of EDC Las Vegas in the rearview, Insomniac has continued its tradition of donating hundreds of thousands of dollars in plants and trees to local residents.
After the promoter’s flagship festival at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway came to a close on May 19, Insomniac partnered with Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick on Tuesday to give away roughly $200,000 worth of flora used to decorate the event site to county residents, News3 Las Vegas reports.
Back for a fifth consecutive year, these tree donations underscore the city’s efforts to fight urban heat island impacts in Las Vegas, for which Kirkpatrick has previously emphasized the importance of tree planting.
Heat island impacts, such as dense concentrations of pavement, buildings, and other surfaces that retain heat, can make urban areas up to seven degrees warmer than areas with foliage, according to Kirkpatrick—a significant increase in Las Vegas, where average summer temperatures can reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
In addition to plants and trees, Insomniac also donates a percentage of ticket sales from each EDC Las Vegas to various area nonprofits and charitable funds, totaling more than $2 million in gifts since 2011.
Those who missed the first day of plant giveaways earlier this week can stop by the Las Vegas Motor Speedway today, Thursday, May 22, until 4PM PT, to pick up remaining plants, while supplies last. Each person is limited to three items and must be able to transport the plants themselves.
