Insomniac may soon have a solidified presence in San Diego. Evidence has surfaced recently of the worldwide electronic music giant moving to acquire the high-end nightclub OMNIA San Diego.
Pre-pandemic, OMNIA San Diego was a hot spot for big-name DJs just like its sister club in Las Vegas. Armin Van Buuren, Marshmello, and other main stage acts would perform there on a regular basis. But the club has been closed since the pandemic took hold nearly two years ago, even as events started returning to other venues in the region.
Now signs have surfaced that Insomniac is making a play for the major club. Insomniac put out a call for job applications in venue-related positions like bartenders and artist liaisons. San Diego-based publication, EDM Identity, confirmed interviews took place for these positions and also got word of a potential name change to NOVA SD.
The most concrete piece of evidence can be found in the venue’s liquor license. The public document names Pasquale Rotella, Insomniac’s Founder, as a manager of the venue.
Should Insomniac acquire OMNIA San Diego, this will represent the promoter’s most significant presence in the major SoCal city. Insomniac hasn’t been absent from San Diego, as they have hosted club nights at Bassmnt and Dreamstate events at House of Blues San Diego. But there hasn’t been a single nucleus around which Insomniac’s presence could expand.
OMNIA San Diego would serve that purpose. Festivals, like the recently launched Audiotistic San Diego (another sign of Insomniac’s commitment to the city), would permanently have an afterparty venue. Insomniac could also host all of their branded club nights there. Similar to how FNGRS CRSSD, the current primary house and techno promoter in San Diego, has Spin Nightclub.
