Interview with Kaivon at Lost Lands

Kaivon is a DJ and producer from Los Angeles, California that has stolen many of our hearts through his music. With over 18 million streams across music listening platforms and counting, there’s no telling what’s next for Kaivon as he continues to gain more recognition for his talent. Some of his most well-known songs include “First Breath” and “I Love You.” which feature melodic and future bass. One of his most recent accomplishments is performing at Excision’s 2021 Lost Lands festival where he wowed thousands of people! We were able to catch Kaivon at Lost Lands and have a chat before his set.

EDM Maniac: Hey, Kaivon! Thanks for meeting up with us here at Lost Lands before your set! How are you doing today?

Kaivon: I’m doing awesome! Super excited to be performing at my first Lost Lands for everybody :)

EDM Maniac: You just hopped stage here at Lost Lands! What was it like performing at LL? How does it feel when you’re on stage?

Kaivon: It was amazing :) The stage setup was really cool with how the trees were in the middle of the dance floor and I was blown away by all the amazing people that showed up even though Excision was playing at the same time! There’s no place better than being on stage and feeling everyone’s energy (except for maybe actually hugging everyone before and after the set).

EDM Maniac: We’ve been listening to your music for a long time and when you released your last few tracks, I think it’s safe to say all of your fans were shocked! From songs like “Your Eye” to “I’m Different” which appeared on Subsidia, what changed?

Kaivon: I am a fan of all kinds of electronic music and wanted to be able to play both heavy and melodic songs in the set. I thought the best way to do that was to put out multiple genres and not be confined to one type of “sound” when performing.

EDM Maniac: What was your inspiration for shaking things up?

Kaivon: I honestly wanted to make music that was heavy af that I could play in sets to accompany the more melodic tracks I’ve put out.

EDM Maniac: How did you come up with “Kill Him”?

Kaivon: I was trying to make one of those fakeout drop things and then loved the sound of the bass I was able to create on it after that. It just hit me right in the face, which was tight.

EDM Maniac: You also released the song “Last Forever” with Monika Santucci not too long ago. Can you take us through your creative process for that song?

Kaivon: Yeah totally! Monika sent me over amazing vocals and I also wanted the drop to be sort of delayed without drums and then hit super hard after. My favorite way to make a track is to get a vocal and then create everything around it rather than make an instrumental and have a singer sing over the instrumental.

EDM Maniac: We love to see that you’re pushing your limits and stepping out of your comfort zone! Do you ever get worried about people not liking what you put out?

Kaivon: I think it’s natural to care about what people think of your music, but I’ve learned that at the end of the day, I gotta put out music that makes me feel something and just hope that hits people the way it hits me.

EDM Maniac: What do you think is the biggest challenge when creating music?

Kaivon: I think the biggest challenge when creating music is trying not to get too into my head and worry about any negative critiques. I sometimes forget to have fun.

EDM Maniac: What does creating music mean to you?

Kaivon: Creating music is therapy for me. It’s so beautiful to create art and to listen to and appreciate other people’s art. I think we are all artists :)

EDM Maniac: Not too long ago you opened up about being one year sober and your journey through that. What was your biggest motivator through your sobriety journey?

Kaivon: I honestly got super sad and substances weren’t helping me escape anymore. They were helping for a little while but then making me feel horribly miserable the next day. I loved drinking and partying but I couldn’t handle the comedown.

EDM Maniac: What advice would you give someone who is starting their journey?

Kaivon: Listen to your heart and don’t be so hard on yourself. Nobody is perfect and you are exactly where you are supposed to be. You have a beautiful purpose.

EDM Maniac: Lastly, what are three fun facts about yourself that you don’t think your fans know about you? (Ex: Irrational fear, favorite restaurant, having an extra toe, etc.)

Kaivon: 1) I love following sports and playing basketball was my number 1 passion before music. 2) I’m obsessed with retro video games and retro video game consoles. 3) Dogs make me happy!

EDM Maniac: If you could leave one message for your fans, what would that be?

Kaivon: We are all connected. I love you. Don’t give up and if you’re going through a rough time, remember that nothing stays the same <3
