Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker gave clubbers a surprise while DJing at Barcelona’s famous Nitsa Club on Saturday, as he debuted a song from what is believed to be the group’s first new album in five years.
Footage shared on social media shows the psychedelic rock visionary pausing his set to ask the crowd: “You want to hear a new Tame Impala song? You’re going to be the first ones to hear it, you realize? There’s no going back from this point on.”
With full, thumping kick drums, hazy, atmospheric synths, and groovy bass chords indebted to deep house, the as-yet-unnamed track diverges from Parker’s famously guitar-led Tame Impala sound in favor of a more beat-minded ethos, in line with his recent work on Dua Lipa’s rave-influenced 2024 album, Radical Optimism, and with Justice on a pair of singles from their 2024 album, Hyperdrama—including the Grammy-winning track “Neverender.”
Lyrically, the song seems to be about an ending relationship. Parker sings: “Everybody knows how I feel about you / So you can act surprised if you need to / I am still your friend if you think it’s worth it / It just means that I’ll see you when you see you.”
The band is also set to announce a major tour in the coming weeks, according to a report from SPIN.
Tame Impala hasn’t performed live since March 2023. Parker’s last album as Tame Impala, The Slow Rush, arrived in February 2020 and featured hits such as “Borderline” and “Is It True.”
