American garage acolyte Neumonic has gone crate-digging for his latest dub, dropping a raucous rework of Mr. Oizo’s famous “Flat Beat.”
Arriving today, the California-based producer and DJ’s new track, “Fat Beat,” adds even more thump to the early electro house classic. By beefing up the original tune’s already wonky bassline with modern sine bass elements and chopping its iconic dial tone samples into pure garage mayhem, the aptly titled rework bridges two distinct musical eras under one banner: filthy beats.
“Real one’s know where this one came from, praise Flat Eric and Mr. Oizo for an iconic tune,” Neumonic—real name Nick Neumann—wrote on Instagram today.
Also heralded as a critically acclaimed filmmaker under his birth name, Quentin Dupieux, Mr. Oizo released “Flat Beat” on France’s foundational F Communications label in 1999.
Additionally known for its absurdist music video starring Flat Eric, a small, yellow puppet made for a string of Levi’s commercials directed by Dupieux, the track would go on to become a surprise hit in Europe and lay the groundwork for the bloghouse craze right around the corner in France.
Now, “Fat Beat” sees Neumonic bring the all-time tune into the future, marking his first release of the year after a slew of garage slappers that saw the SoCal artist emerge as a force to be reckoned with in 2024.
Forward-thinking productions like “Movin,” “Makes Me,” and “Nawty,” have done bits in Neumonic’s high-energy performances from The Untz Festival to Lightning In A Bottle, and as a founder of San Francisco’s Garage Access, he’s leading UKG’s stateside revival from the ground up.
