Southwest Airlines Raises Price For Upgraded Priority Boarding

Southwest is raising the price of an upgrade where travelers can pay to board before other passengers on its first-come-first-serve seating policy.

Typically, when Southwest passengers check-in for their flight, those who check in closer to exactly 24 hours before the flight get the best boarding number.

But the A1 through A15 spots are dedicated to Business Select passengers, and then A-List and EarlyBird travelers can board before the masses. Upgraded positions are available for an extra fee in order to be bumped to the A1 to A15 slots if one is available.

The price of this upgrade was about $30 with a maximum of $60, but now the price has been raised to $80 max as of May 15.

Pricing is based on flight duration and demand, and if the A1 through A15 spots are available.

The increased pricing could be a result of Southwest’s $2 billion upgrade plan on their flights which includes charging ports, faster Wi-Fi, and larger overhead bins.

Yet, Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card and Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card holders can get up to four upgraded boarding positions per year.
