The domestic US airline Southwest has started installing USB charging ports into some of its planes, making their budget flights even more convenient.
Each seat on their Boeing 737 MAX will soon feature two charging ports: a 60-watt USB-C port and a 10.5-watt USB-A port.
Southwest does plan on installing USB-C and USB-A ports on their entire Boeing 737 MAX fleet as part of a $2 billion upgrade plan that includes charging ports, faster Wi-Fi, and larger overhead bins.
The upgrades come at an opportune time for the airline as it just reported record revenue during the first quarter of 2023 at $5.7 billion. Though they still saw an overall loss of $159 million.
But many fliers are hesitant to travel with the budget domestic airline as they have had a string of technical issues that led to thousands of flights being canceled or delayed leaving travelers stranded in airports.
But the new charging ports and improved in-flight experience alongside their open seating policy and two free checked bags could increase Southwest’s revenue even further as a top choice for business or commuter travel.
