Spencer Brown is taking his next project off the grid.
The progressive house and techno artist took to social media yesterday to share the first and last announcement for a new project that will investigate modern dance music’s reliance on social media by forgoing use of the platforms entirely, and will soon be documented in a book by bestselling author Max Marshall.
According to Brown’s post, he and Marshall, a journalist known for his work in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and GQ, will team up as a new DJ duo called No Socials, making tracks and playing venues around the world.
However, as opposed to coming across their latest mix on your social media feed, if you want to hear them, Brown wrote, “it’ll have to be through the music we make, the shows we play, and the eventual book about this journey.”
“Someone in ‘the business’ once told me that I should spend 50% of my time on music, and 50% becoming an influencer,” Brown continued of the inspiration behind No Socials. “If I spend 50 hours in a week making tracks, I should spend another 50 making content. But I became a DJ because I was shy as a kid, and music communicates what’s in my heart. I’m not really made for the influencer industrial complex.”
To get the ball rolling, the veteran producer-DJ and former Anjunabeats breakthrough artist shared a one-hour No Socials mix on his YouTube channel, which features the pair dropping eight new original tracks and edits in a cow pasture, and marks the last time fans will hear from them on the platform. Check it out below.
Marshall’s book on the process will be published by Harper Collins. Its release will be announced at a later date.
