TikTok has launched TikTok Music in Indonesia and Brazil—home to the world’s ninth-largest music industry based on recording revenue, per data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
“TikTok Music will make it easy for people in Indonesia and Brazil to save, download and share their favourite viral tracks from TikTok,” said Ole Obermann, Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok.
The company says that the paid-only subscription service will offer users a “full catalog of music from thousands of labels and artists, uninterrupted ad-free listening, and a download function for listening offline.” A one-month free trial is also available.
TikTok has backed up this claim by securing agreements with all three major record companies: Sony Music; Universal Music Group; and Warner Music Group; ensuring a large catalog at launch.
TikTok Music will also include a feature where users can stream on-trend songs that are going viral on TikTok, a search by lyrics tool, a song recognition tool similar to Shazam, and in true TikTok fashion, a karaoke-style lyrics feed.
The new service will replace music streaming platform Resso, a service owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, in a clear move to stack up against other major music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Resso will officially stop service on September 5, 2023.
There is no news on whether the streaming platform will be available outside of Brazil and Indonesia, but one could expect expansion to be a logical next step.
