Dortmund’s Tresor.West is offering free admission on Saturdays this month to show its support for the underground and equitable clubbing as the venue faces financial difficulties.
The sister club to Berlin’s famous Tresor opened its weekly run of “Community Nights” on Saturday, January 10, opening its doors with no cover charge and unannounced lineups to take the club “back to the underground,” organizers wrote on Instagram.
The Community nights will continue through the end of the month, with two more free parties at the reclaimed factory venue planned for January 18 and January 25.
Tresor.West’s Community Nights come as part of the club’s new #SaveTheUnderground campaign, an effort to drum up support for the venue and others like it that are facing extinction.
Announcing the move in a statement posted to Instagram on January 3, the Tresor.West team highlighted the “bitter reality” of club closures across Germany and the club’s home state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where 77 percent of clubs have reported financial difficulties or are considering closing, according to venue trade association LINA NRW.
“Tresor.West is one of them,” they wrote.
“Instead of charging €20 for entry, we’re inviting you to the Community Nights for free – going out shouldn’t be a privilege but must remain accessible,” the statement continued. “Instead of bowing to the costs of the headliner DJ market, we’re investing in you, shining the spotlight on ambitious local DJs and crews, and appealing to renowned artists to meet us with fair fees.”
Tresor.West has also asked fans to“trust the curation of our unannounced line-ups” and support the club by purchasing new venue merch on-site, buying drinks, and bringing friends.
Two weeks ago, Berlin’s renowned Watergate nightclub closed after 22 years in business due to financial pressures and rent increases. Renate, a nearby club Renate with the same landlord as Watergate, has also announced that it will permanently close this year. Renate plans to find a new location, per DJ Mag.
