These past few weeks have been a rollercoaster of a ride in terms of what has gotten announced, what has gotten canceled, and what has gotten postponed. Now, the Berlin Club Commission believes that it will take the country about two years to return to its normal state (pre-pandemic). This means that there is a strong possibility that nightlife in Berlin will continue to be restricted until 2022. Fellow chairwoman of the nightlife umbrella organization and CEO of Club Gretchen, Pamela Schobeß, predicted this outcome and in an interview with rbb24 she disclosed that “We are the first to be closed and the last to be allowed to reopen.”
Events for March of this year have already been pushed back a year despite Germany announcing a €2.5 billion cancellation fund to cover the cost of events planned for the second half of 2021 last month. This should not come as a recent surprise as UK Music had previously warned that there was a strong possibility that festivals will be canceled again this year unless there was a sudden change in support from the government.
It will be interesting to see how other countries respond to the actions in Germany and if this will be a global trend going forward.
