In a historic move, Tomorrowland has confirmed three festival weekends for 2022. The unprecedented third edition will take place July 15-17 in Boom, Belgium.
This expansion comes as a result of multiple postponements of the 2020 edition due to COVID-19. Unlike many festivals such as EDC Las Vegas that were able to salvage a 2021 event, Tomorrowland faced two consecutive postponements.
News of a possible third weekend of the event started circulating back in September of 2021. Following the two postponements of the primary festival and one postponement of Tomorrowland Winter, the event was apparently over €25 million in debt. The idea of a third festival was proposed as a means to mitigate that financial burden.
Tomorrowland has hosted two weekends since 2014, and so to run the standard would likely not assuage their financial struggles. It would also not properly honor the return of the globally-renowned mega-festival. A third weekend will allow more fans to attend (even pre-pandemic Tomorrowland tickets were hard to acquire), and if it goes well, three weekends could be the standard moving forward.
