The organizers of ARC Music Festival recently announced that the building where the historic Chicago nightclub, The Warehouse, was located is set to begin its landmark designation process with the City of Chicago, starting this Thursday.
Established in 1977, The Warehouse is revered as a holy site for house music fans around the world hosting the genre’s founding fathers such as Frankie Knuckles.
A petition on change.org was launched in early March 2023 to save the building. In the description, the petition reads, “The City of Chicago must act now to take proactive steps to protect this building of immense cultural significance by designating it a Chicago Landmark.”
Now, in an increased effort to preserve the building, the organizers are urging the house music community to express their support by submitting a letter to ccl@cityofchicago.org before 12:45 PM CT on Wednesday, April 12th. It’s important to note that significant support is needed for the process to succeed.
The significance of The Warehouse extends beyond the house music community, as it holds a special place in the history of Chicago’s black and LGBTQ+ communities as well. Supporting the landmark designation process would ensure that this building remains a testament to the origins of house music and the communities that influenced it.
