Detroit is where techno was born. Movement Detroit is where techno is celebrated, and the historic festival is coming back to Hart Plaza in 2022.
Given that Movement always happens over Memorial Day Weekend, it was one of the first major dance music events to be lost to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Organizers initially pushed for a postponement to September 2020, and then hoped for May 2021, but those dates were also scrapped due to COVID.
Despite the harrowing situation happening throughout the world, Movement maintained its commitment to techno by hosting Movement At Home over Memorial Day 2020. The streaming series featured Detroit mainstays like the father and son duo Kevin Saunderson and Dantiez, as well as international sensations including ANNA and Ellen Allien.
Movement also hosted panels such as Needle Drops—where DJs like Carl Craig and Seth Troxler discussed dance music’s role in social change—and Movement Selects which were another series of live-streamed DJ sets from Carl Cox, Maceo Plex, and more.
There have been no lineup announcements for Movement 2022 at this point, but hopefully, it’s similar in grandeur to the 2021 lineup teaser that never came to be.
Movement Detroit 2022 will take place May 28-30, 2022 at Hart Plaza. Click here to be the first to know when tickets go on sale.
