Rezz And Subtronics Continue To Innovate With New Track, “Black Ice”

Rezz and Subtronics have joined forces to release “Black Ice,” their newest collaboration out now via HypnoVizion & Cyclops Recordings.

The delightfully hypnotic single is the anticipated follow-up to their 2022 collaboration “Puzzle Box” and further underscores their ability to continually break new ground, both as solo artists and as a team.

Simply put, “Black Ice” is a sonic journey, traversing a variety of genres, from Subtronics’ far-out leftfield dubstep to Rezz’s powerful mid-tempo time signatures–even bass house makes an appearance.

Ominous, cinematic builds are cut with two thumping drops, layered with a variety of texture-rich sounds and crunchy distortion, showcasing the technical mastery of each producer, both of whom are at the top of their game.

In addition to being both artists’ first release of 2024, “Black Ice” also marks another new chapter in Rezz’s “bass music era,” following her release of another highly anticipated collaboration with NGHTMRE in November.

Prior to the NGHTMRE release, Rezz explained on X, formerly Twitter, that this “bass era” sound would be different from her typical mid-tempo style, but added that she “wouldn’t call it dubstep either.” Now, “Black Ice” comes good on this promise of something completely new altogether.

Rezz is coming off of a landmark 2023 which included the release of her acclaimed goth-themed IT’S NOT A PHASE EP, a sold-out headline show at Red Rocks, and the live debut of REZZMAU5 at Veld Music Festival. She has already outlined big plans for 2024, including new merch and a slew of festival appearances.

Subtronics also had a colossal year, punctuated by collaborations with Excision and Ganja White Night, plus the massive headline ANTIFRACTALS tour. This year, DJ Mag North America’s Best DJ of 2023 will hit the road for another headline tour, the Tesseract Tour, which includes huge arena shows at Barclays Center and State Farm Arena, ahead of the release of his sophomore album.
