Travis Scott has just announced a 2023 North American Tour, his first since the tragedy at Astroworld in 2021 where 10 people lost their lives either at the event or soon after due to injuries sustained.
The tour is beginning in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 11, before coming to a close on December 29 in Toronto. Notably missing from the list of 28 tour dates on the upcoming “Utopia – Circus Maximus Tour” is his home city of Houston, where Astroworld was held.
A spokesperson for Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner told Rolling Stone yesterday that “at one point” a hometown show was planned and the city was working with the Toyota Center arena to set up a safety plan.
Turner himself commented earlier this month that Scott had “booked the Toyota Center for a concert in October,” but the city’s exclusion from the tour itinerary indicates that the likelihood of a Houston show is now unclear.
Scott’s tour will celebrate his new album Utopia and is set to follow a major performance at Rome, Italy’s Circus Maximus, in which Scott performed a number of songs from the album.
According to Pitchfork, the show prompted concerns of an earthquake from locals, resulting in calls for concerts to be banned at the historic venue moving forward.
The tour announcement comes after news from earlier this summer that the rapper will not face criminal charges for the 10 deaths and numerous injuries sustained by Astroworld attendees in 2021, as the result of a massive crowd crush.
Scott and event promoter Live Nation are still facing several civil lawsuits relating to the event.
In response to District Attorney Kim Ogg’s decision not to indict Scott, his spokesperson Ted Anastasiou said, “Now that this chapter is closed, we hope for the government’s efforts to focus on what is most important – stopping future heartbreaking tragedies like Astroworld from ever occurring again.”
