The World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2023 Economic Impact Research Report revealed the forecast for 2023 US tourism including several indicators of travel recovering from the pandemic.
Overall, US Travel and Tourism sector is expected to add more than $2.2 trillion in GDP, surpassing the 2019 high of $2.17 trillion.
International visitor spending has risen, though delayed due to extended travel restrictions in China and Japan, up more than 150% from last year to almost $116 billion.
The travel and tourism job market is also projected to create 1.2 million jobs this year, recovering 6.75 million of the 8 million jobs lost during COVID and holding one in ten jobs across America.
Julia Simpson, WTTV President and CEO said, “Over the next 10 years, WTTC forecasts that Travel and Tourism will account for almost 21 million jobs – a staggering one in eight jobs across the country.”
But she also warned of US tourism potentially waning in the future, stating, “The U.S. remains the world’s biggest Travel and Tourism market although predictions show China will take that crown in 2032.”
