Warner Music Group Brings Licensed Music To Canva With New Partnership

Popular web-based design studio Canva has announced a major partnership with Warner Music Group (WMG) and Merlin Entertainments, becoming the first visual communication platform to add commercially licensed music “at the point of creation,” on their platform.

According to a press release from Warner Music Group, customers with paid, education and nonprofit Canva subscriptions will receive “unprecedented access to use music clips from some of the world’s biggest artists in their designs.”

The new partnership will also support labels and artists with the opportunity to present their music to millions of creators across the United States, Europe, Brazil, Canada, and Australia. Artists will receive royalties when clips of their songs are used in published Canva designs.

With the clearly symbiotic relationship, Canva and WMG are capitalizing on consumer trends that place video-based social platforms as the backbone of the media landscape. According to Cisco, more than 80% of global internet traffic comes from online video usage.

The number of Canva design exports using TikTok templates has more than tripled over the last year, according to the company. The amount of videos created on Canva has risen by 70% in the last year and has also brought an increasing number of searches for specific, licensed audio tracks on the design platform.

“Music is such a fundamental expression of creativity, and offers an inspirational starting point for many,” said Silvia Oviedo, Head of Content, Discovery & Print at Canva. “We are thrilled to welcome Warner Music Group and Merlin to the Canva content ecosystem, and can’t wait to see what millions of music fans, content creators, educators and beyond design using content from their favorite artists.”
