The Rumors Were True. Swedish House Mafia Is Officially Back

For once, the rumors are true. All the recent hubbub surrounding the biggest and most illusive trio in dance music was founded in fact as Swedish House Mafia have confirmed their reunion.

“Reunion” may even be too feeble a word. Their short-lived tease that brought a few shows in 2018 was a reunion. Giving EDM fans of a past era a small glimpse into their starry-eyed memories of bliss.

This is a resurrection. Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, and Steve Angello aren’t interested in bringing back old memories. They are interested in making new ones.

“It was just like, ‘What the f–k do we do? How do we come back? Do we just give them another [version of] what we’ve done before?’ ” Ingrosso told Billboard. “I was like, ‘F–k that; it’s depressing to go back. It’s disgusting to go back.’ ”

This resurrection includes a new team behind them, a new record label, a new global tour with the support of Live Nation, and their debut album Paradise Lost which is set to release in the back end of 2021.

In the days leading up to this announcement, today’s date of Thursday, July 15 was a focal point of the rumors. Rumors that, again, have proven true. Beyond the confirmation of their comeback from their own mouths on this day, Swedish House Mafia have released “It Gets Better,” the first single from their new album.

This single shatters any doubt that Swedish House Mafia are adhering to their prior sound. Raw, tribal drums circumvent ghostly vocals and breakbeat reframes in this condensed yet widescreen dance music piece.

Along with the single comes a new music video for the track, in which every sign alludes to their resurrection. Thousands of bodies in close proximity breaking out of statuary bonds to dance for the first time in years as the three members—who are asleep in an endless mass of cable—open their eyes in unison at the end.
